Opening on Thanksgiving? You’re Dead to Me!

In 2011, retailers started opening at midnight on Friday to have their Black Friday sales. In 2012, they crossed the line and started opening earlier and earlier.

This year, in an effort to be first, a bunch of retailers are opening early on Thanksgiving day and some are even staying open through Friday. REI was praised for not opening on Thanksgiving and encouraging people to go outside. I wish more retailers would follow their lead.

I’ve never been a fan of Black Friday. You want me to wake up early and drive to a crowded parking lot and fight huge crowds so I can save $5 on some bauble? No thanks.

…and now you want me to do it while feeling guilty for keeping employees from Thanksgiving dinner with family or friends? No. No. No.

Some people are saying they won’t support this by not shopping at these places on Thanksgiving. I’m going to take this one step further and do my best to not shop at any of these retailers at all between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’ll probably buy most stuff on Amazon anyway.

Here is a list of retailers that I know of that are opening on Thanksgiving:

  1. J.C. Penney
  2. Kohl’s
  3. Toys R Us
  4. Walmart
  5. Target
  6. Best Buy
  7. Sears
  8. Macy’s
  9. Belk
  10. Sports Authority
  11. h.h. gregg
  12. Dollar General

If I know of more, I’ll add them on.

Also, on a related note, I hate the word “Doorbuster” and would love to find the guy who invented it and punch him in the face. I may decide to avoid those stores too. I hate them using that word so much!
