6975 Space Fleet Headquarters had lost contact with the far outposts and colonies several days ago. The last transmission came through garbled. "...coming down...captured in...beam...entire defense force is helpless. Send...immedia..."
In response, Space Fleet sent its flagship, the nearby L.S.S. Explorien, to investigate. Just over an hour ago, the first report came in.
"It appears that the outer colonies have been completely obliterated. There is very little trace of any civilization left on the surface. Our away team was able to activate a surviving computer system. The data stored in the computer confirmed our fears. We're being invaded."
The L.S.S. Explorien commander continued, "Logs we obtained seem to indicate that the reports of U.F.O.'s from 6 months ago were merely scouting missions. They were not meant to attack. It appears these U.F.O.'s have now taken the next step. They're invading."
The Explorien also sent along an image taken from an outer defense satellite from one of the colonies. A U.F.O. in the image appears to be a large saucer design with a small saucer on top. Although the image is a bit fuzzy and would normally be laughed off as a hoax, the destruction of the colonies says otherwise.
Space Fleet has placed all ships in sector N619 on alert.

They're here. The U.F.O.'s have landed!
No, this isn't another episode of X-Files or SFC's Sightings. U.F.O.'s are here...and they're mad as heck!
This is the first U.F.O. review on ADEQUATE.com, so it may cover some aspects of this space sub-theme which other reviews will not. There's so much to say, so I'll save time describing the set and assume you've seen the picture. I'll spend more time on the inside story.
The set comes with four mini-figs. A blue one is apparently an android and doesn't have shoulder pads or a helmet. The other three are red, grey, and black aliens. All three have helmets and shoulder pads to surround their transparent heads (with faces so mean that Flatfoot Thompson looks happy!)

The flying saucer is actually two saucers...one on top and one on bottom. They can dock using magnets. The bottom half is made of four grey quarter-circle round pieces. These saucer pieces aren't actually round, they've got lots of straight edges. (If you put all four together, you'll have a 24-sided saucer.) The designs on the saucer pieces are pre-printed and not stickers. So much for any "Starship Enterprise" models.
The bottom saucer has rotating "lights" on the bottom as well as engines pointed in each 90 degree direction. Even though the saucer was designed to fly in any direction, it does have a front. In the front, there's a cockpit for the pilot of the bottom saucer to sit in with large laser cannons on each side. There's also a cockpit in the rear for the co-pilot. 360 degrees of visibility for this crew.
On the right side, there's a magnetic arm for lifting a ground vehicle out of the center cargo bay of the saucer. The vehicle is really simple and has nothing more than four wheels and a magnet. The driver sits in front and doesn't have any controls. (U.F.O.'s must have some sort of telepathy.)
On the left side, there's a small cargo bay for an itty-bitty little vehicle. It's nothing more than four wheels and a 2x4 plate.

The top saucer has two-quarters grey (with designs) and two-quarters florescent-yellow saucer pieces. These are smaller saucer pieces than the bottom saucer. The front and rear of the saucer have black Explorien-type radar pieces. The sides have movable antennas. In the center of the saucer is the pilot for the craft. He's enclosed inside a florescent-yellow dome and has a nice 360 degree view.
The bottom of the smaller saucer has two magnets which allow the two ships to dock securely and easily...although there isn't a perfectly snug fit.

The U.F.O. Alien Avenger is a great ship and is probably representative of most of Lego's U.F.O. sets. It seems to have a pretty typical U.F.O. design...like something you'd expect to see on display at Area 51. The ship can separate into a total of four vehicles...one for each alien being (or android). This can be handy for conquering a world as I'm sure all our alien friends out there can attest to.
I'm not a big fan of saucer-type ships. The Spyrius Saucer Centurion just isn't how I design ships. For a saucer design, this is the best I've seen from Lego.
I like a lot of things about this set...the color scheme, the design, the neat new pieces, the mini-figs, and the functionality. The only things I don't care for are the pre-printed designs on the saucer pieces. Also, the radar pieces on the front and back of the top saucer seem a little hokey, but they're easily removable.
I did make one modification to my set which you might want to consider. The top saucer was supposed to alternate between grey and yellow. I moved the yellow saucer pieces to the front and the grey to the back.
If you're a space fan or have to pick just one U.F.O. set, this is a good pick. The only thing which might stop you is the >$60 price tag. It will eventually go on sale though and should not be passed up by anyone who wants a flying saucer to invade their town.
